Malin Young Engineers festive competiton 2023
WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO CREATE A FESTIVE DESIGN THAT WE CAN MAKE INTO A SCULPTURE…
Use a blank A4 sheet to create a design that our team of engineers and specialist welders can make. The sculpture should be at least 1 metre high. In designing your structure, please think about:
- Shapes – What types of shapes will make the structure strong and durable?
- Materials – How heavy will it be and what will it look like?
- Design – What is it about your structure that will remind people of the festivities?
- Cost – Will the sculpture be easy to make and use materials you can easily get? (so maybe steel or aluminum rather than gold!)
Once complete, please get an adult to help take a picture of your design and email it to [email protected] by 11th December 2023. All entries will then be individually judged by our expert panel of engineers and all will be given individual feedback.
The winning design will be made into a full-sized structure, which will be displayed behind the South Rotunda in Glasgow over the festive break 2024. All pupils from the winning individual’s primary class will be invited to Malin Group premises across 2024, to see the drawing made firstly into a design, then a 3D model, before being welded and assembled.
The competition is open to all children in primary 1-6, across Scotland.
Good luck!

We are delighted to offer our festive brochure for 2023, featuring a host of STEM activities, to keep the little ones entertained over the school holidays. From elf on a shelf, to gingerbread house structures, there is lots to stimulate their thirst for STEM – and keep them occupied.
