Case Study
Design, Manufacture and Delivery of 4 Catamarans for the Ministry of Defence
OVERVIEW
Malin was awarded a £5.7m project to provide four submarine catamarans for HNB Clyde. At 12m long and approximately 60 tonnes, each catamaran is a significant structure.
The project scope extended to the design, manufacture, delivery and installation of the four new catamarans, as well as the removal and recycling of eight end-of-life units from the base.
As Nuclear Safety Implicated equipment, the project was subject to rigorous oversight from the Approving Authority (Design) within the Ministry of Defence (MOD).
The programme includes:
- Naval Architecture and Structural Design
- Build of four catamarans
- Deck furniture and electrical interfaces
- Testing and commissioning
- Marine operations including underwater surveys, tow and installation, and the removal and recycling of the existing catamarans
The project brings together Malin’s design, fabrication and marine operations capabilities within a single delivery package, providing responsibility for the structures from initial engineering, through to their final installation at Faslane.
