Case Study
Design, build and transportation of Saturation Dive Module for Well-Safe Solutions
OVERVIEW
Malin was contracted by Well-Safe Solutions to design, fabricate, outfit and install a new Saturation Dive Spread (SDS) module onto the Well-Safe Guardian, a semi-submersible rig optimised for well decommissioning operations in the UK North Sea.
The new module, which can accommodate 12 saturation divers, enabling 24-hour diving operations directly from the rig, represents a significant new capability for the Well-Safe Guardian, becoming the first North Sea rig to combine a modular saturation diving system with its existing intervention capabilities.
Following design and fabrication, undertaken by Malin at bespoke premises in Burntisland, the module was transported by Self Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMTs) and rolled onto a barge chartered by the team. From Burntisland, the barge was towed to Rosyth, where the heavy lift vessel Uglen carried out a full test lift. The module was then transported by barge to the Well-Safe Guardian, located in the Firth of Forth off Methil. The final installation was heavily weather dependent, with both wind and swell limiting the available operating window. Once suitable conditions were identified, the Uglen lifted the complete SDS module from the barge and installed it onto the rig.
The project is a good example of a complex end-to-end operation, bringing together design, fabrication, SPMT operations, marine transportation, heavy lifting and offshore installation. It also required careful co-ordination between multiple vessels, locations and stakeholders, including the Well-Safe team and wider supply chain.
