Case Study
Design and build of the Buoyancy Assist Module for the Dreadnought class submarines
OVERVIEW
Malin designed the Buoyancy Assist Module (BAM) on behalf of BAE Systems. Certified by Lloyd’s Register, the BAM is a 300 tonne semi-submersible vessel, which will interface with Dreadnought class submarines, in order to reduce their draught as they transit the Barrow Dock system. The BAM can provide close to 1,000 tonnes of additional buoyancy.
The BAM exemplifies Malin’s capabilities in innovative naval architecture, structural design, complex hydraulics and heavy-lift design.
Malin engaged Fraser-Nash Consultancy to manage and deliver the associated safety case. Manufacture of the BAM is ongoing at Cammell Laird at the time of writing, whilst Malin continues to provide design and technical support throughout the build and commissioning.
The project demonstrates Malin’s in-house engineering expertise and our ability to deliver complex floating structures and hydraulic design, including interfacing with RN submarines.
