Case Study
Design, Fabrication, Transportation and Installation of CalMac Ferry Vehicle Ramps
OVERVIEW
Malin was awarded a framework contract with CalMac Ferries for the replacement of the vehicle ramp system onboard the Loch Class ferries, with the first vessel being modified under this contract, the 35m MV Loch Striven.
Malin’s scope of work included the replacement of the two vehicle ramps, as well as the associated hydraulic and control system. Loch Striven is classed with Lloyd’s Register and hence the design, fabrication, testing and installation is subject to LR approval.
The ramps are predominantly manufactured from S355, with substantial stainless steel 316 incorporated in way of unpainted areas such as wear plates and 17-4PH pins. The ramps incorporate numerous areas of machining and line boring in order to ensure the new ramps would correctly align with the interfaces on a 40-year-old vessel.
Malin designed, built and tested the ramp system before transporting it to the Isle of Bute where the ferry could be hauled out. Malin then installed the ramp system onboard Loch Striven.
Following installation and commissioning Malin conducted a number of load tests to satisfy Lloyd’s Register, including a 2.5 tonne brake test, and a 45 tonne static load test, successfully completing the first vessel upgrade under the framework.
