Marine engineering specialists Malin Group are proud to have been awarded Silver in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), reflecting the firm’s commitment to the Armed Forces community and wider defence sector.
The Silver award, the second-highest accolade available through the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, demonstrates the firm’s support for the Armed Forces community, spanning Reservists, service leavers, cadets and military families.
Alan Hamilton, Project Lead, and Helenor Fisher, Director of Marketing and Business Development, received the award from Brigadier Andy Muddiman, Naval Regional Commander for Scotland and Northern Ireland, on behalf of the Secretary of State for Defence. The presentation took place at this year’s Silver ERS Awards, hosted by the Lowland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (Lowland RFCA) at the Burrell Collection in Glasgow.

A long-standing commitment to defence
This latest award builds on Malin Group’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, the Armed Forces community and the wider defence sector, relationships which closely reflect the company’s heritage in marine engineering and shipbuilding.
Malin Group’s involvement in the defence sector stretches back to the 1980s, from work on the Type 45 destroyers and major block moves for the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, to latterly supporting the launch of today’s Type 26 and Type 31 frigates.
The group has also worked to help individuals transition from the Armed Forces into civilian careers, and to inspire the next generation to consider careers in maritime and engineering. Spearheaded through the Malin Young Engineers initiative, the firm offers talks, visits and interactive workshops to a range of young people, from Primary 1 pupils to school leavers, university students and serving cadets.
Championing veterans in the workplace
John MacSween, Managing Director at Malin Group, said: “We’re incredibly proud and humbled that Malin Group has been awarded Silver status under the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme, a recognition that reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting veterans and the wider Armed Forces community.
“From actively encouraging ex-service personnel to bring their skills and experience to our team, through career and training events, to supporting aligned charities such as The Not Forgotten, we’re passionate about championing the valuable contribution veterans make in our workplaces and communities.”
Celebrating employers across the region
The Silver ERS Awards ceremony brought together employers from across the region that have demonstrated their commitment to Defence and the Armed Forces community. As well as celebrating the achievements of this year’s 19 recipients, the event gave attendees the opportunity to network with like-minded businesses and organisations, and to recognise the contributions made by Reservists, service leavers, cadets and military families.
