First tenants announced fOR SMTP

Coastal Workboats were delighted to confirm their intention to move to the new Scottish Marine Technology Park, alongside the Malin Group of engineering companies, who are owners of the Park . The formal agreement of the LOI was confirmed at the recent Aquaculture event, which was attended by both parties.

The Scottish Marine Technology Park will be built on almost 50 acres of brownfield land on the banks of the River Clyde at Old Kilpatrick in Glasgow. It is envisaged as a new centre of excellence for marine engineering and complex marine manufacturing, bringing world-leading talent, expertise and innovation back to the Clyde and generating £125.4 million annually for the local economy.

Once complete, it will include several large fabrication facilities, its own 150m deep water heavy lift berth, and a deep-water jetty with a 1,100 tonne ship hoist, the largest of its kind in Europe.

Coastal Workboats are an established commercial workboat builder operating from Exeter, Devon. With an established customer base in Scotland and internationally, they have identified additional demand that can be serviced from the Park and anticipate building four workboats per year using a new 20 metre high workboat fabrication, service and repair facility alongside offices, meeting space, kitchen, canteen, restroom and parking facilities for at least 50 local employees.

Brian Pogson, Managing Director of Coastal Workboats said:

“We share Malin’s vision for a thriving, collaborative, and sustainable new marine hub on the banks of the Clyde and we are very pleased to assist in the creation of additional economic and social value in the area. We’d like to be on site and working on newbuild and repair workboat projects and look forward to expanding our physical base to serve our new and existing Scottish clients – and beyond.

Chris Dunn, Principal Naval Architect at the Malin Group said:

“Attracting new partners to the Scottish Marine Technology Park is key to our vision of jointly creating a world leading centre of marine engineering excellence, and we are delighted to welcome Coastal Workboats to the SMTP community.

“Coastal Workboats is a leading manufacturer of high-quality commercial vessels in both aluminium and steel.  This purpose-built facility at the SMTP will herald a new chapter of modern, effective boat building on the Clyde and will bring significant high-value employment opportunities to our industry”.
