QUALITY IS PARAMOUNT TO ALL THAT WE DO

Our quality procedures for design and implementation of technical analysis is rigorous and we pay particular attention to model quality checks and standardised use of software throughout our Group.
Our safety procedures onsite and while working on vessels have been formed and developed to cover the specific risks associated with our work and the expectations of our clients. We are committed to safety and risk management at all stages of a project from concept through to detailed design and implementation to deliver a system fit for purpose. This is achieved through our phased approach to design and development together with a safety assessment process (HAZOP) to ensure that potential hazards are captured early in the design development phase and that risk reduction measures are implemented to ensure that the remaining risks are considered to be as low as is reasonably practicable (ALARP). We hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 accreditation with DNV GL and our fabrication facility is accredited with ISO 1090-1 Execution Class 4 and ISO 3834-2. Our IT systems are protected and accredited to Cyber Essentials Plus.

GARY PATERSON, MANAGING DIRECTOR

Gary Paterson is our Managing Director, joining Malin in 2014 after completing an MEng in Aeronautical Engineering at The University of Glasgow. Gary has a broad experience on the logistics side of Oil & Gas projects, most notably working as an in-house Heavy Lift Specialist on the TCO project. In addition to being AP (Appointed Person) qualified, he also specialises in sea fastening design & global & local structural checks on vessels and barges.

chris cairns, commercial director

Chris joined the team in 2016 and is the Commercial Director for Malin Abram. Chris graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2011 with a degree in Quantity Surveying and spent 5 years with a worldwide oil and gas subsea contractor in Aberdeen, where he managed numerous high-profile tenders for major oil and gas projects. In his current role, Chris is responsible for overseeing Malin Abram tendering activity and developing the Abram client base and creating strong customer relationships.

james bowie, engineering director

James Bowie began his career as a summer intern with Malin Abrams, before gaining a degree in Naval Architecture and joining full time as a graduate. Having successfully worked through the graduate programme and Naval Architect stream he now holds the Engineering Director position in Malin Abram. James has experience in a variety of projects from marine heavy lift transportation to design and manufacture of bespoke jigs and has been involved in major site operations worldwide.

james parkhouse

James is a Chartered Engineer and Naval Architect with over 20 years in the maritime industry. Prior to joining the Malin Group James has worked within ship building, ship repair, maritime regulation and Port Operations sectors within the UK, Europe and the Far East. This has given James a diverse range of technical, project and contract management experience. James’ primary role within Malin Abram is programme management for our major transport projects and the CD01 Barge programme.

iain macleod, senior naval architect

Iain joins the Malin Group as a Senior Naval Architect, bringing an array of skills and experience. Having attained a Master of Engineering (MEng) focused in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Iain subsequently developed an enviable portfolio of projects, across a number of years in the oil & energy industry. Iain offers proven practical skills, as well as expertise across a number of key areas including Structural Design and Analysis, Inspection, and Stability.

david cooper, senior naval architect

David joined Malin Group in 2018, after graduating from the University of Strathclyde with a Masters Degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. David has played a key role as project engineer on the load out and float off of the Offshore Patrol Vessels, producing all calculations and documentation and assisting with site operations. With expertise across stability analysis and Load-Out and Float- Off operations, alongside a broad understanding of various marine operations, David has more recently been involved in the engineering and operations management of the Type 26 block moves and upcoming Load-Out and Float-Off of HMS Glasgow.

alan mundie, senior project engineer

Alan has recently joined Malin Group as a Senior Project Engineer with a background in the Offshore Renewables, Ship Management, and Oil and Gas sectors. Prior to joining Malin, he has been involved in a range of projects, including the transport and installation of floating wind turbines, asset management of FPSO’s, and providing warranty services for offshore transports. Positioned within Malin Abram, he will primarily be involved with heavy lift and marine transportation projects.

lia mitchell, graduate project manager

Lia joins the Malin Abram team with an enviable range of customer relationship and project management skills, which she has honed over the past 4 years and is currently working towards becoming a project manager. Having worked across sites in Edinburgh and London, she successfully managed maintenance teams to create proactive and reactive works, gaining experience in building client and contractor relationships. Lia graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2021 with a degree in Business Management and looks forward to managing a range of turnkey projects as part of our Malin Abram team, specialists in heavy lift operations and turnkey transportation projects.

nick banks, contracts engineer

Nick is a Contracts Engineer for Malin Abram working as part of the tendering team. Having graduated with an Honours degree in Law, Nick started his career in the oil and gas industry with a subsea services provider in Aberdeen, working in the Asset Management Department for two and a half years. After a career break and relocation to Glasgow Nick joined Malin Abram in December 2018, where he has relished being involved with tendering various heavy lift and marine scopes.”

scott young, project manager (turnkey)

Scott joins Malin Abram as Project Manager with over 12 years’ experience in engineering, specifically in the area of lifting equipment within marine and offshore environments. Prior to that he Graduated from Strathclyde University with a degree in Product Design Engineering. Having kicked off his career as a Design Engineer, he has since diversified his expertise and experience in the area of project management, an area he will specialise in within Malin Abram, particularly turnkey projects.

calum harker, naval architect

Calum is a Graduate who Joined Malin Abram in 2021 having graduated with a master’s in mechanical engineering at The University of Strathclyde. Prior to Joining,Calum spent 6 months as a Quality Control Assistant at our Westway facility, giving him an appreciation of the transition from design to manufacture. With a interest in structural design as well as practical work on site, Calum has been involved in a range of projects, from Project cargo shipments to the T26 ROFO, which has deepened his knowledge base and engineering skills.

helenor fisher, director of Business Development & Marketing

Helenor comes to the Malin Group with over 15 years of business development and marketing experience, with a diverse range of skills spanning brand development, copywriting, design, digital and website development and marketing strategy. Prior to joining the Malin Group, she worked extensively in the Higher Education sector (Glasgow University and Glasgow Caledonian University), involving projects on a worldwide scale, as well as for Skills Development Scotland. Since joining the group, she has increased brand awareness, through the creation of digital and hard copy materials, combined with successful targeted advertising and content marketing, teamed with strategic business development actives.

Laura comes to the Malin Group with over 10 years of sales experience, with a diverse range of skills in developing client relationships, driving sales & marketing initiatives and researching potential markets. Although relatively new to the Marine Industry, her previous roles have strengthened her abilities in driving to learn new skills and working on her personal ‘can do approach’.

audrey mchugh, office manager

Audrey recently joined the Malin Group as Office Manager, having previously worked for over 30 years in an established economic development organisation. With a proven record of success in administration and office management, combined with her enviable experience and diverse range of skills, Audrey is well placed to support the four Malin Abram Directors.

john cunningham, graduate project engineer

John is a Graduate who joined Malin Abram in 2022 having graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a Master's in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. John started with Malin Abram in the run up to the Type 26 ROFO operation and was abled to hit the ground running in developing his skills and experience. This operation fulfilled his passion for hands-on engineering and he has since become involved with diverse projects to build his knowledge base.

drew lithgow, graduate naval architect

Drew joined Malin Abram in 2023 having graduating with a master’s in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at The University of Strathclyde. Before joining Drew completed two summer internships at the group contributing to both Structures and Naval Architecture team within Malin Abram. Drew is delighted to return and is looking forward to the challenges ahead!

Ruaraidh Campbell

Ruaraidh joined Malin Group in 2022, having graduated from The University of Strathclyde with a BEng (Hons) in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. This is his first full time job as a Naval Architect and he is delighted to have started his career at Malin Group in order to develop his skills and learn from experienced professionals. Ruaraidh has a particular interest in Computer Aided Design and Analysis, having focused heavily on Computational Fluid Dynamics throughout his final year of his studies.
