Offering a new regional hub for heavy lift operations and turnkey transportation services at iconic swan hunter site

Following its 125th year anniversary last year, Malin Abram is delighted to confirm the establishment of a new regional office, based in the historic Swan Hunter Shipyard in Newcastle.

The Swan Hunter Shipyard, an iconic landmark nestled along the banks of the River Tyne, has a storied history that also spans over 150 years. Established in 1850 by shipbuilder John Swan, the yard quickly gained a reputation for its craftsmanship and innovation. It became a vital player in the industrial boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, contributing significantly to the maritime economy of the region.

At its height, Swan Hunter was renowned for constructing some of the largest and most advanced vessels of its time, including cargo ships, naval vessels, and luxury liners; indeed, it is estimated that since it’s inception until closure, more than 1,600 vessels were expertly crafted at the site. The shipyard also earned acclaim for its role in building the famous RMS Mauretania in 1906—one of the fastest ships in the world, heralded for its engineering brilliance. Throughout both World Wars, Swan Hunter played a crucial role in supplying the British Navy, producing warships that were instrumental in naval operations.

However, like many shipyards during the latter part of the 20th century, Swan Hunter faced economic challenges, leading to its eventual decline and closure in the late 1990s. Despite this downturn, the significance of the site remained, echoing the pride of a community that had thrived on maritime industry.

In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve the legacy of Swan Hunter, and it is within this context that Malin Abram has chosen to open their new office. The selected new office echoes with the organisation’s Headquarters, the South Rotunda, a building similarly steeped in transportation history and forming a central place in the Govan skyline, and shipbuilding history books. However, choosing this iconic site was not merely a nod to nostalgia; it represents a strategic alignment of Malin Abram’s vision with the shipyard’s rich past. The shipyard embodies resilience and ingenuity, qualities that resonate deeply with the company’s mission to revive and celebrate maritime heritage.

And again, mirroring the organisation’s vision of the Scottish Marine Technology Park (SMTP), the strategic location facilitates connectivity with local maritime businesses, suppliers, and stakeholders, fostering an ecosystem of collaboration and growth. Harnessing both sites, Malin Abram wishes to anchor itself in 2 communities, rich with potential, and built on a solid heritage of quality and maritime expertise.
